National Council of La Raza, Charter School Development Initiative, Washington, DC
In 2001, as a direct response to the increasingly alarming educational outcomes of Latino students and to the growing involvement of NCLR Affiliates in offering educational services and programs to students in their communities, NCLR launched a visionary and ambitious initiative to support the development of 50 charter schools throughout the country. These 50 new schools form part of a larger network of existing NCLR-affiliated charter and alternative schools, with a total of 100 schools. As a means to significantly increase educational opportunities and high school graduation rates for Latinos, the NCLR Charter School Development Initiative advocates for the academic success of Latino students.

Self-Help, Durham, NC
One of the biggest challenges charter schools face is gaining access to funding to build, purchase, or renovate facilities to house their schools. Self-Help primarily serves charter schools located in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Texas but will consider loans elsewhere. Self-Help will consider a loan to charter schools with financing needs over $2 million, which are located in low-income areas in other states, if the charter school can show that there is no other source of financing available.  Priority is given to schools serving low-income, minority and at-risk students. Self-Help has been providing financing to charter school operators throughout the Southeast since 1997. We are committed advocates of the charter school movement and have a proven track record with over $65 million in loans made.
